- Savor both the flavors of Norway and the storied heritage of Gamlebyen by dining at two of the hotel’s culinary partners: Restaurant VÆRK and Majorens Kro & Stue. Located just around the corner from Gamlebyen Hotell Fredrikstad, Restaurant VÆRK, a former vicarage dating back to the 1720s, serves up a daily breakfast buffet for hotel guests. Then, stop by Majorens Kro & Stue for a quintessentially Norwegian lunch or dinner inspired by the bounty of the season and regional food traditions.
- Start the day or indulge in a sweet intermission just like the locals do with a warm Gamlebybolle (also known as Kanelbolle), or a Scandinavian-style cinnamon bun. Unlike cinnamon rolls in the United States, these Norwegian treats are elegantly twisted, heady with fragrant cardamom, and typically crowned with a healthy sprinkle of crunchy pearl sugar. Although these spiced pastries are available at many places around the fortified town—in fact, the scent of cinnamon buns permeates the breeze throughout Gamlebyen—they are also available directly from the hotel.
- Dive into the catch of the day when exploring the Hvaler archipelago. Located along the southeastern side of the Oslofjord, the Hvaler Islands are dotted with old fishing ports that bring freshly caught shellfish and fish to the local seafood market at Skjærhalden daily. Visitors can even watch the fishermen bring in the day’s haul at around 4:00 PM before heading to one of the archipelago’s waterfront restaurants to enjoy coastal delicacies like fish soup and shrimp.
