Guests staying at Gamlebyen Hotell Fredrikstad will not find an onsite eatery to enjoy a meal before or after a day of adventures. (For a quick snack, however, Gamlebybollen, quintessential Norwegian-style cinnamon buns that are popular throughout the Old Town, are available at the hotel for those looking to indulge in an authentic local treat.) Instead, thanks to the close partnerships fostered with various restaurants within the town’s fortified walls, visitors can avail themselves of some of the finest dining the Old Town has to offer and experience a unique slice of Gamlebyen’s history.
In the morning, breakfast is served just a few minutes' walk away at Restaurant VÆRK in a space known as Prestegården, or “The Vicarage.” A former priest’s residence dating back to the 1720s, which was designed by famed Norwegian architect Arnstein Arneberg, this historic setting plays host to a sizeable breakfast buffet of both hot and cold dishes and Norwegian-style morning favorites. Later on in the day, the dining partner for lunch and dinner is Majorens Kro & Stue (meaning Major’s Inn & Living Room in English). Also within steps of the hotel, this area restaurant specializes in traditional food inspired by regional food traditions and crafted out of the best seasonal, local ingredients available. Even all the game that is served is procured by the restaurant’s own hunting team.
