- Slip on a pair of comfortable walking shoes and greet the morning by strolling along the ramparts of the Old Town—or “jangle på vollane,” as the locals say. The star-shaped fortifications of Gamlebyen are perfect for wandering and luxuriating in the town’s historic ambiance. Or, for those who prefer to do their exploring at a slightly speedier pace, bicycles are also available from the hotel upon request for complimentary use. Pack a picnic filled with pastries and other treats from a local bakery or market to enjoy along the way.
- Soak up the creative spirit that permeates Gamlebyen with a self-guided gallery tour. History has long been a muse for artists the world over, and those who call the Old Town home are no exception. Here, visitors can marvel at everything from pottery and sculpture to glassblowing and textile art. Some stops to visit while on walkabout include Gallery 1845 (once a former military mess hall, or dining room), Bastion 5 (one of the fortress town’s oldest buildings, dating to between 1674 and 1691), and Glasshytta, or “The Glass Factory,” the first studio glass workshop in Norway. Be sure to pick up a souvenir or two to take home.
- Climb aboard the free Fredrikstad ferry for a unique view of the Old Town and the much newer downtown district. Crisscrossing from one side of the Glomma River to the other, between Gamlebyen and more modern city, this convenient transportation option not only makes for an easy way to get from Point A to Point B. It also offers spectacular on-the-water views of the best that Fredrikstad has to offer.
