In Edvard Grieg's Footsteps
Follow in the inspired footsteps of Edvard Grieg, the famed Norwegian composer and pianist hailed as one of the most influential composers of the Romantic era, during this three-night, four-day journey between Grieg's former hometowns of Bergen and Lofthus.
This symphony of an adventure starts in Bergen, where Edvard Grieg called home for much of his life, with a two-night stay at Opus XVI, which takes its name from one of his most famous works, Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16., and stewarded by his relatives. Upon arrival, enjoy a guided tour of the hotel's Edvard Grieg exhibit, followed by a glass of sparkling wine in the hotel lobby's "Opus 16 chair." (For the full experience, earphones playing Grieg's masterful work are highly recommended.) Later in the evening, sit down for dinner at Brasserie & Bar, the hotel's restaurant, for a multi-course feast inspired by Edvard Grieg's 60th birthday. The next day, spend some time exploring the best that Bergen has to offer before enjoying a five-course meal at Bryggen Tracteursted, which features a seasonal menu inspired by the city's culinary traditions.
Before leaving for Lofthus village in Hardanger, consider a visit to Troldhaugen, where Edvard Grieg spent the last 22 years of his life. While not part of the package, this piece of Grieg's history is highly recommended. If possible, plan a visit during the summertime to enjoy a lunchtime concert of Grieg's repertoire.
Lastly, continue on to the quaint village of Lofthus in Hardanger, where Edvard Grieg lived for a time and was inspired to write some of his greatest works, including sections of the score for Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen. Enjoy a one-night stay at Hotel Ullensvang, which still plays host to Edvard Grieg's former comper's cabin on the hotel grounds, including a seasonal, locally sourced dinner at Restaurant Ullensvang. At the end of the journey, listen to tales of Grieg's time spent in Hardanger during an audio-guided tour of Lofthus village.
