Nermo Hotell & Apartments was constructed when mighty kings and towering castles ruled Europe for centuries following the fall of the Western Roman Empire.

Dating back to 1442, the history of Nermo began when a coveted piece of land was sold to Bengt Henrikson of Gudbrandsdalen. Several centuries later in 1866, the Nermo family purchased the area and began construction of the hotel. Due to its location at the base of the Øyer Mountains, many adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts spent time at the location. Even famous ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl visited the Nermo Hotell, stating that the summers he spent in the area directly influenced his lifelong passion for the wilderness. The area also drew hunters and fishermen from around Norway, making the Nermo farm a natural stopover for trips out into the wild.

The expansion of the Nermo’s estate became a necessity and, by 1923, the farm had opened a guesthouse for travelers on their way to the mountain. But the destination was interned during World War II, and became a school for deaf children afterward. It was not until it was announced that Lillehammer would host the 1988 Winter Olympics that the Nermo family was able to reestablish their business. By 2001, the entire hotel was renovated and expanded to include 53 apartments. The beautiful Hafjell Golf Course was built on an old potato and grain field surrounding the hotel as well around the same time. Today, Nermo Hotell & Apartments is run by a fifth generation of the Nermo family.
