- Climb inside the 35-meter Colossus of San Carlo Borromeo, also known as San Carlone, which was the largest statue in the world for nearly two centuries. Located in Arona, Italy, this monumental statue was built between 1614 and 1698 to honor Saint Charles Borromeo, a cardinal and archbishop of Milan canonized in 1610. Designed by Giovanni Battista Crespi, the statue is made of hammered copper plates supported by an iron frame and stands on a granite pedestal. This innovative construction method influenced later large-scale statues. Visitors can enter the statue and climb up to the head, where they can look out through the eyes and ears of the statue.
