Visit Mesa Verde National Park and take a ranger-guided, rather strenuous tour of cliff dwellings built in the late 1190s in alcoves beneath overhanging cliffs. They are some of the best-preserved archaeological sites in North America.

Ride horses or take a winter sleigh ride at the Rapp Corral, 20 miles from downtown Durango. Many films have been shot there, including 3:10 to Yuma and the 2012 version of The Lone Ranger.

Stop by the Durango Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Museum and feed the trout, see fish and animal mounts, and hands-on displays.
