• Taste some fantastic Italian American cuisine while out exploring the local surroundings. The greater River North neighborhood has long been associated with Italian American fare for more than a century. As such, the area is the site of many historic Italian-inspired dining establishments, including the Club Lago and Gene & Georgetti.
• Try the iconic Chicago-style deep-dish pizza. Some historical sources even credit the invention of the deep-dish pizza to the original Pizzeria Uno, which is still active right in the heart of the surrounding River North neighborhood. Originally opened as “The Pizzeria” in 1943, Pizzeria Uno has since become a staple throughout Chicago.
• Savor a classic hamburger at the revered Billy Goat Tavern & Grill. The restaurant was first founded by Greek immigrant William “Billy Goat” Sianis in 1934, who had achieved his nickname from the pet goat he owned. Sianis later achieved notoriety when he purportedly “cursed” the Chicago Cubs from winning another World Series after both he and his goat were denied entry into a game at the 1945 Fall Classic. (The original location was outside of Wrigley Field until the 1960s, when Sianis relocated it to River North.)
