A member of Historic Hotels of America, this unbelievable building was built in February of 1927 and has been wowing visitors ever since. It is an absolute gem and a must-see if you’re on the island of Oahu.
This hotel helped usher in a luxurious era in Hawaii tourism. The hotel, when all was said and done, cost $4 million dollars to be built. Today, that same price tag would be $64.5 million dollars!
The Royal Hawaiian Resort was built with luxury in mind and the hotel opened its doors with a staff of 300 people. The resort was six stories high and offered 400 rooms. Today, with new additions, the hotel now offers 528 rooms that you can reserve.
The hotel was painted pink in a distinctive Moorish-style architecture. It was iconic and became a premier beach destination for visitors traveling worldwide. The hotel briefly closed operations to the public during WWII, when it was leased by the Navy as a major rest and relaxation center for the Navy personnel.
The hotel was restored to its pre-war elegance and reopened in 1947, to the delight of all. On 15 acres, it was the perfect destination for those flying in from the mainland, as more and more visitors traveled by plane instead of boat.
